Zelkova (japanese elm) Dining Table, Feb. 2012
Just delivered today (2/26) the latest dining table, in Japanese Elm. The top is a book-matched board of solid zelkova, and leg system of old, reclaimed wood in the same. The legs are hand-shaped, and the decorative fastening blocks are exposed on the outside of the surround apron - where they are usually hidden behind. Will get photos up a.s.a.p. There are also four decorative 'knee-braces' to support the legs, which can be seen in the photos, looking like fiddle heads.

Latest Project, In-House.
I am currently working on three orders: a zelkova (keyaki) dining table; an ash, low chair; and a walnut work desk, with drawers; however, the 'big deal' is that I'm building a building inside of my building, my workshop. It will be a tea and meeting room, with display shelves for latest diminuative works, books, ads, etc. Just a woody, comfy place to get away from the rougher workshop, and have respite, talk, and dream. If you're in the area, feel free to stop by for tea and a look - perhaps even a small purchase!
Latest Publication, Woodwork magazine.
A late notice on the re-publication of my article, "Getting Your Fiber," in the last and 'Best Of' issue of Woodwork magazine, Winter 2011-12. The same was published previously in Woodwork, August 2004. Check it out if you get a chance. Oddly enough there are three or four articles in this last issue of Woodwork which are on or influenced by woodworking in Japan. Mine being one of them, of course. Wood has a lot to say, and to teach, if we would but listen. R.

New Woodtrees, 2011
The Elves and I have finished 123 new Woodtrees for the Holiday Season! For the first time I have applied Seasonal colors to a few of the Trees, just to see how people like them. The story goes that my Finnish/American grandparents had a small one of Christmas colors, made of narrow slats of wood and a wire running up out of a thread spool. I remembered that from my childhood and have been making about 50 of them every year since 2003. This year they are for sale in several shops and my workshop at 12,800 japanese yen. They are appreciated for the naturalness of materials, the variations of natural wood colors, and the fact that the parts can turn into quite a variety of shapes - as seen in the photo, for example. These are some of the latest pieces,
mostly done in the last 3 months.
Also made 49 of my Christmas "Woodtrees".
The leg system for the Ogawa dining table is
made from an old Japanese rice-pounding mortar.
It was cut in half and used at each end of the table,
with a connecting shelf in between.
